Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 282 – -$152

Apparently I need to know more than just canva to be able to design. I have to admit I never wanted to learn photoshop and every chance I got to not learn it, you bet I took it. But somehow, here I am in a dilemma. Well really it’s not a dilemma as such since obviously I have to learn photoshop in order to create designs. I’m just trying to find an excuse to convince myself to once again skip it, but we both know I can’t. Such is the cycle of life.

So I finally uploaded my first 5 designs after a day or two of fumbling with photoshop. I’m still learning a few tricks and I’ve started getting alittle more comfortable with it hopefully I’ll be a pro soon. I will most definately be uploading more in the coming weeks. Okay, so far so good, everything looks good as far as I know and we are ready to make some ”dallaz”.

Now something’s bothering me about this redbubble site. There isn’t any way to know how your products are performing. I don’t even know whether my products got impressions or not. There’s really no way of telling how your products are doing except from the number of sales you make. I find this quite inadequate and a tad bit annoying. Like what can I do without metrics, when I’m kind of a math nerd? There’s no way to measure my progress and that’s just something my OCD can’t get over.

I might just be missing something since I only joined the platform like yesterday. If there is, then I’m doing a very bad job of navigating the site and it shows. It might also come from my urge for validation or even lack of patience. Let me just give it a bit of time to see how it goes.

In other news, I’ve been flirting with the idea of starting a YouTube channel for some time now. I’m still not sure, what with my anxiety and the gift of being too self-aware, and being uncomfortable infront of a camera. I just don’t know. I’ll give it a bit more thought albeit reluctantly. Also, I’m looking at starting a blog to promote the t-shirts using content creation. This way I can also capitalize on adsense and later affiliate marketing. I like this idea since it’s kinda like a long-term strategy. It will definately take more work in the begining but once the foundation is built, its a little easier from there.

By the way, I hope you are taking some of these actions with me, don’t just be a passive reader (I should put that on a t-shirt). This is a long-term thing and I’m really not looking to make much in the beginning, but it will definately pay off in a year or so. Honestly this is how business works, it takes time. Although, not necessarily when you have a comfortable marketing budget.

As always destroy the like button below and comment “not a passive reader” in the sections beneath this post. Cheerio!!

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 275 – -$152

Good afternoon from this side of earth dear reader, I’m absolutely thrilled and chilled to be writing this. I know the intro is kinda corny but I’m trying to be fancy these days since rich people are! I’m also trying to use the power of manifestation as you can see from the preceding sentence.

So now onto the juicy stuff. Last week was one of those weeks where I thought I was going to have to come up with another idea again just because the last one didn’t work. Redbubble, a print-on-demand marketplace, was randomly shutting down sellers’ accounts for apparently no good reason. And here I was excited to start my own store and make some mulla!

I was shocked and stayed shook for quite some time. I wonder how all those sellers who depend on the website for their livelihoods felt waking up one random morning unable to log on to their stores. It must have been devastating. I can’t even begin to imagine how they must have felt sending numerous emails and trying customer support to no avail. I know how I’d feel if I was in their position and it’s not a feeling I’m a fan of.

As if that wasn’t enough, they had to wait close to 7 days to get a response from Redbubble. I’m thinking, as I’m sure many of you are, that at the end of the day many of these large companies out there don’t care about their employees, only the bottom line. Sorry to generalize like that in case yours is a good one. This also got me thinking in the long-term in case I were to carry on with print-on-demand for a while. I need to be thinking of establishing my own reputable brand and creating a loyal customer base because at the end of the day, those two are the only things that for the most part really matter in business.

With all that being said, I still went ahead and signed on, created a store and I’m ready to start creating some fancy text based designs. Of course I did all this after Redbubble made a statement acknowledging the “Glitch”, as they refered to the incident, and stating that they were investigating the cause. This wasn’t a satisfactory response in my opinion, but then again time is money and I wasn’t going to wait around forever. So hopefully the incident will be sorted out and won’t happen again as I start becoming active on the platform.

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 267 – -$152

Another week another update. I hope you are doing okay, I am too, not that you asked. Is there a name for people who talk to themselves like I do? There’s gotta be, and I sure hope I’m not the only one with this madness. Any-who I hope you are used to it by now, if you aren’t yet, buckle up!! By the way thank you for getting me past the 100 follower mark, much love and appreciation. I’m not sure though, whether that makes me excited or under pressure.

Sometimes it takes a little bit of endurance to get something done. Between my slow computer, my somewhat inadequate internet and minimal, if any, funds for upgrades, I’d say I’m getting through it pretty comfortably. I’m patting myself on the back because I can, and also because no one else offered (not that I asked). Also the negative balance above just goes to further prove my point.

I have to say I’m one of those people who gets bored really quickly with anything that doesn’t excite me long enough. I’m not sure if this is one of the things that’s holding me back or if it’s the one thing that makes me better. They say (don’t ask me who says) that in order to succeed in entrepreneurship one has to pick one thing, stick with it and do it till it pays off. They also say that a business person should know when to quit.

I’m wondering, how am I supposed to stick to something that isn’t working? And if I should know when to fold, how long should I stick to it before I quit? I know someone will say, “just use your common sense you idiot”. I remind you that common sense is not so common. So forgive me if I seem to not have any, obviously I do (do I?)

Now last week I said I had a brilliant idea that I thought was the one and I know you can’t wait to hear. Well remember the saying, there’s nothing new under the sun? This is nothing new. Also remember the saying, don’t try to reinvent the wheel something something (I forget how it goes or even if it’s a saying at all)? Well, I won’t. Honestly I’ve tried so many things before that at this point I’m just not keeping score, my new motto is “if it works it works”. Dolph Lundregn fans can relate.

I’m thinking of starting a t-shirt design store on Redbubble. I can here you already going, no please Arnold don’t do it. Now before you loose it hear me out. Redbubble is like Ebay for t-shirts (and other products) except the shirts are all new and I don’t have to pay for anything, I just get the profits. Also they have a ready customer base who frequent the site daily looking for new products to buy. So I figured why not get a piece of the pie to get me off the ground.

All that sounds promising but the downside is that I’m going into a market that is already highly saturated. And customers will likely never see my designs let alone buy them. Well this is where consistency of uploading designs and taking advantage of their daily design upload limit to create as many designs as possible, comes in. In case you’re wondering, I have no special design skills but I can still create text-based designs which might be cool and even get me that lambo!!

As always thump that like button below and follow this blog if you aren’t already. Cheerio!!

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day ?? – -$??

Wow what a year this past one has been. If you ask me, I wouldn’t wish it on any generation. The pandemic that changed everything, definitely not my style of writing (I still think you care about my crazy introductory rants lol). I must say though that there isn’t any business that wasn’t affected by the pandemic in one way or another. In my case, it just threw everything out of balance, I couldn’t even update my blog (glad I can still comfortably blame covid-19 for my laziness, how nice). I couldn’t go out with my friends (a nice excuse for being anti-social for a while). Among other things that I can’t remember (who am I kidding I’ll remember 2020 forever)

Anyways that was just a nice little maneuver to try and deflect from answering to you about why I’ve been away for this long. No I didn’t catch corona in case you’re wondering. Although there were some moments when I thought oh shit this is it, I got it!! Turns out it was just the normal flu. By the way, am I the only one who thought flu is like a normal cold you catch and it goes away? I mean technically speaking it is (as if I’m a specialist), but I never knew you could get a flu shot in advance and not catch it. Talk about ignorance.

I know you’re probably wondering what happened to the mission and whether I quit or just got plain old lazy. If you aren’t then you should know by now, I’m narcissistic like that! Just kidding (not really). Haha don’t worry I’m here to give you all the dets (details, does anybody say dets anymore?) Although they might not be what you expect, that’s if you thought I made a lot of money and realized talking to you wasn’t a priority anymore.

I have to admit starting a business online isn’t easy my friend. It’s no wonder many, if not most, people end up just teaching about it. I mean think about it, how many times have you seen articles about business from people who don’t even have a business? How many times do you see YouTube channels that show you how to make money when they aren’t even following their own advice? Granted you might find one or two important tips, but still it defeats the purpose if they can’t even make money themselves.

Also riddle me this, if you, after all your hard work, failed attempts and long hours of research, suddenly found a method that works and generated you a tonne of cash, would you just offer it up to anyone who would listen? I get that I might not be as philanthropic as some, but it doesn’t make sense logically speaking. So take all the advice, methods, tips and tricks you find out there with a grain of salt.

Alright enough of that, let’s get into the update. I made a lot of zeros my friend, and I mean a lot! I probably should share some with you, I wouldn’t mind. Yes it is a lot, the kind that makes you wanna cry and not in a good way. I made so many zeros if there was a competition, I would be the king of zero makers. But serious though my account balance is in the red in case you’re still wondering. But don’t be disappointed yet because I have a plan. I think this is the one and I feel so good about it. Yes I’ve said that a lot in the past and yes I’ve turned out to be wrong all of the time, but please just bare with me, I promise we gone make it!! Stay tuned!!

As usual smash the like button below if you found something useful from this piece. Oh and share it (though I’m not too sure if there’s a button for that). Cheerio!!

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 71 – -$52.77

Greetings from myself to you wherever you are enjoying this current situation (speedy recovery to you or your loved ones if God forbid they are unwell). I must say Shopify giving newbies 90 day free trial is the best thing that has happened to me. Before you get excited I haven’t made that much money, it’s only 1 sale but who’s counting, maybe I should start selling a course! Just kidding. Anyways back to the point, this 90 day free trial has given me time to test different things and fail, then keep researching, testing and failing even more. If it was the usual 14 day trial I would have quit by now.

So last week I said I was going to try eBay drop-shipping, but then I realized that’s exactly what people like me would do. Try one thing for a while and then when it doesn’t work out, just quit and skip to something else. I did some soul searching and more research and found out that everybody else that is successful failed at some point in their life but they never quit. I can’t remember how many times I’ve thought about doing something else. I’m sure if you read this blog from the beginning you noticed. And those are just the ones I wrote about. I realize now that nothing comes easy, success ain’t cheap or easy and if I’m going to make it I have to not quit.

You may have noticed that my balance above has not changed and that is because, like I mentioned above, I finally made 1 sale. $8 more spent and 117 more store sessions later and here we are, a sale (chi-ching!). I feel rich already, is this what being Jeff Bezos feels like? I kid folks, it’s just the excitement taking over. So I made a sale of $34.00 and I spent $8 on Bing ads plus the product cost which was about $26 (including shipping which was $6.00) meaning my profit was $0 (34-8-26=0). Can’t say I’m surprised though, I mean if it wasn’t for the current global situation and rapid increases in shipping costs, I would have had some profit.

I did more research and digging just to find out what works better and stumbled upon a YouTuber named Kevin Zang. He has some really good content on his channel. I also came across another guy called Kalil (not sure if I spelled that correct) who has a complete Shopify tutorial for beginners. The video is about 5 hours long so buckle up if you’re interested learning a thing or two. I found some really good information on there and I think I finally found what I was looking for. I mentioned in my previous articles that I wanted to start a business that would generate me money on autopilot even when I sleep. While I chose drop-shipping for this exact reason, but in my opinion, the way most people are doing it now isn’t actually built to last for long.

Most dropshippers at the moment look for a winning product, market it on FB and milk the profits till it runs dry. Then they repeat the same process multiple times over and over again. I have nothing against this model, I’ve heard a lot of people make a lot of money very fast with this method but I just don’t vibe with it. I want to build something long term, something that can withstand the test of time, something I don’t have to worry about other people copying and stealing as is the norm in dropshipping. In order to achieve this I have to think like the big brands, the businesses that have been in existence for a long time and what they have done and/or are doing currently. I know I can’t compete with them at their level now but they also started somewhere, they also wanted to become a big brand when they started.

What I’m talking about is starting a branded drop-shipping store, an evergreen niche store to be specific. This way I won’t have to worry about my product not trending anymore or constantly looking for those hot products every time. All of these just to stay competitive and to make money. I mean think about it, you spend so much time searching for a winning product, create a store around it, create a fantastic ad, launch that ad, then an hour later someone else just takes your product slaps it on their store, rips off your video ad and runs it on FB making even more money than you. That must kill some morale in you at some point, some people get used to it, but as a creative I personally can’t.

And so that is my whole reasoning behind this new route I want to take. By the way, what’s more is that once I optimize everything at some point in the future I won’t have to worry about paying for ads or buying inventory at really expensive costs. Because traffic will now be organic and I will be ordering inventory direct from the manufacturers at very low costs. Profits will be higher, systems will be optimized and my site will just literally be spitting money every single time. Of course without action all of this is wishful thinking and ain’t nobody got time for that. So from now I am on a mission to create the best branded evergreen niche store in the whole world.

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 61 – -$52.77

I have to admit blogging ain’t easy folks, and I’ve only been at this for what, like a couple of weeks now, or a month maybe?. I’ve got so much going on between the store, life and then this blog, damn! But I love it. I love giving updates and best of all, I get to document my journey to $1,000,000. That’s a lot of zeros by the way, I’m still freaking out just reading the number out loud. I believe I’ll achieve that even though right now it seems like everything couldn’t get worse.

As usual that was my introductory rant and personal pep talk. I hope you enjoyed it or at most cringed a bit as you read (I know I did). Alright, on to the numbers, and as you have already noticed, there seems to be a pattern here. A downward kind of trend if I may say, meaning I am still losing money. So the numbers were as a result of me experimenting a little and at some point just being plain old idiotic. I went ahead and spent money on something I shouldn’t have purely because I was impatient and quite frankly I thought it would bring in at least a sale or two.

So as you probably remember from last week I changed the product to something else (Flexible phone holder) just to try and see if it would work. I ran ads as I had scheduled and spent about $10 dollars for the week. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a single sale and I had about 75 store sessions all with not even a single add to cart. At this point I felt frustrated and heart broken if I’m being sincere. I mean why wouldn’t I, seeing as I had just spent more money on a loosing campaign.

In my mind I felt there was only one thing left to do. And as I was doing my research as usual looking for whatever relevant information I could find, I stumbled upon a blog about shopify dropshipping (by the way, did I ever mention that shopify denied my application to become an affiliate?). On the blog there was a really nice piece on how to run your store, traffic sources and more. What caught my eye on this site though, was a banner about having a highly converting store made for you for only $10 (cheap huh!).

So I did the only sensible thing any person would have done. Went and read the reviews, and placed myself an order for my site. My reasoning for doing this was the fact that I was getting all these visits to my sites but no actions, so I thought my store had to be the issue. Now granted the guy did a really good job (I thought, at the time), it was just not the kind of store set up one needed to have in 2020. I found out that the store looked spammy and that customers wouldn’t really want to buy from the site, whereas in my head it was the perfect store and the answer to my problems.

Just to test it out, I went and set up bing ads and ran them to this new store. $2 in and 76 sessions as of writing this post, and yes you guessed it, absolutely no sale! You know I really don’t know what I’m missing here and I also don’t have any more money to throw at this. My solution to this problem you ask? Well I came across another dropshipping model, not exactly new but I think it will work. Now you might be thinking that I’m quiting shopify but I am not. I am merely just taking a casual break to sort my finances before I jump back into the deep end. I realized and also found out that in order to successfully start shopify dropshipping, you typically need $1,000. Some say $500 others claim you don’t need anything more than $100. While it could work for some people, I can only speak for my self and as you can see it isn’t going well.

Beacuse you need to test a lot of products to find the winning product, and because you need to run and test different ads and adsets, is the reason why the above budget is suggested. Right now I really don’t have that kind of money but at the same time I just don’t want to quit. So I am getting into Ebay dropshipping where I don’t need as big of a budget to start with. Then once I have some cashflow from sales on my ebay store, then I will start testing products in my shopify stores (they are two now). I will keep you updated on this next week, I hope it goes well.

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 46 – -$29.77

Men, has it been a while? Alrighty, let’s jump straight into it. Today I have some not so amazing updates as you can see from the total above, I am still loosing money. So last time I was set to create and run facebook ads on the product I chose for my dropshipping store (baby diaper bag), which I unsuccessfully did. I ran FB ads for about 2 days before I was met with some issues with my bank and my debit card. I deposited money but it didn’t reflect in time so FB stopped running my ads. This cost me about $4.01. I also ran ads using Bing for about a week or so, as you remember this is what I tried to use in my affiliate marketing. This cost me about $7.00. Hence the new debt balance.

I’m sure judging from this negative balance, you already guessed what happened to the store. I got a whooping 0 sales (zero sales), nada, none, sufuri (in swahili), which was nothing but disappointing at the very least. I got about 102 store sessions with not even a single add to cart, so that told me enough I needed to know about the product. Now I am running ads on a new product, hopefully this is the one (fingers crossed), and I just finished setting it up. The ads are scheduled to start running at midnight tomorrow so I am excited/pumped (call me Big Pump – another failed attempt at making a Lil Pump pun).

Anyways, this time I chose a product that I think will appeal to most people but I am especially targeting women. I made a video ad for this product this time round, something I didn’t do for the previous product. And it was my first time doing that too! Not really though, I have previously edited like a single video, but it still counts coz I haven’t done a video ad. I think it looks okay for a beginner and I hope it will get me started with some sales so I can get a professional one done later.

I am also thinking of running Bing ads too but I want to see how the facebook ad does first. I feel good about this one to be honest. This pandemic won’t stop me! Sadly I have just heard from my supplier that there’s going to be major delays in shipping times going up to 35 days for standard shipping. Yeah, that’s a bummer! I am not too worried about that anyway, because everybody knows the reason why so I’m pretty confident customers will understand.

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 31 – -$18.76

So it’s day 31 of this challenge (if you don’t know about it read day 0) and as you can see above I am currently in debt. I’ve decided to update this in real-time in case you’re wondering and that’s why it’s day 31 and not day 15. So the whole affiliate marketing thing I did earlier didn’t go so much as expected since I just got a couple of reads and no sale (56 clicks and 22 reads) for $10 in 8 days. Although I suspect quite a bit of that number must have come from you reading it (I’m kidding nobody reads this blog [laughs in sadness]). I’m thinking this is not really the way for me even though it got me to take the first action. You might be thinking, why would I quit when I just started. Well the reason for this is because, you see how nobody gets rich working for someone else? (actually I’m wrong a lot of people have gotten rich working for others). That’s exactly why I won’t do it.

Don’t get me wrong here, the mission is still to hit that jackpot but not at the expense of myself. I don’t fancy working for someone else and if I did I would’t do a really good job (hope none of my former employers reads this). I’ve always felt like I was made for more, like I deserved better. Employment for me always seemed like a vehicle to get me to my ultimate destination. Employment itself never felt like the end goal. I always felt like I was being taken advantage of or used this way and so I quit. And boy did I make a grave decision. You see if I can keep a job then I can pump as much as I earn into my business and as it eventually gets better, then and only then can I quit.

Enough of me ranting, let’s breakdown the rest of the debt that I have. So as you know I’m currently a big fan of dropshipping and have been binging videos on end about the topic day in day out. I know most people are screaming ‘that line of business is dead’, but why not find out for myself. So I came about a gentleman called Mohamed Camara on YouTube and he was actually the last push into me making the decision to finally do it. I went and opened a shopify account and purchased a dormain at $12 and a business email for $6 which set me back $18 total. Of course I borrowed this and I’m gonna have to pay it back but the good thing is, shopify has extended their trial period for 90 days amidst this whole global crisis. This is potentially enough time to get me testing out different products until I find the winning one.

I don’t expect to make money in my first 2 months, although it would be nice, but I will be fine in month 3. I have already set up a store and it is up and running as of yesterday. The only things remaining are: creating a video ad, setting up facebook ads and I’m also still waiting on my supplier on cjdropshipping to confirm my sourcing. I’m pretty excited about this and I know you are too.

By the way, I also realized something yesterday. It’s kind of embarrassing and I know you can relate. I wasn’t afraid of failure, I was afraid of success. I mean let’s face it I’m practically broke now, how much worse can it get. And I know how failure tastes, I live it everyday, so I thought to myself what have I got to loose? Nothing! I mean I’ll be in debt if it doesn’t work out but then again I’m already in debt. I will also have learnt alot and quit frankly I don’t think I’m gonna give up that easily. If worse comes to worst, then I’d probably get a job then do it all over again. How’s that for determination. But also what if it works out?

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 14 – $0.76

Wow! Isn’t it just amazing to finally take the first step into online business. Settle down now, I haven’t made any money yet, I just set up an ad with Bing linking to a blog post on Medium. This of course includes affiliate links so hopefully the readers like the piece and buy a piece(drops mic). So far I have about 4 views on the post and it would really help if all 29 of you(yeah the family is growing) could give it a quick peek and tell me what you think.

I have to say it was hard taking actual action and getting myself to actually do it. Until yesterday, I was just a passive reader I’m not going to lie all my insecurities and fears were amplified, which as I now write this, are kind of the things that were holding me back. I like a common quote(I forget by who) that goes “How you do anything is how you do everything” and I’m guilty especially of procrastination. So from now on I want you and I to make a pact that we will do it, it doesn’t matter how small or how late it may seem, we will take the first action, all we need is progress not perfection. Once you take the first action then there is an urge to finish and as long as you keep telling yourself to continue, eventually you will finish it.

I’ve been saying my goals and plans without actually writing them down which actually means I have no goals. I read somewhere that writing down your goals and action plans to the most specific details is the beginning of the process of achieving those goals. What this means is that when you referrer back to your written goals you see the exact steps you planned which makes acting on them a routine. This may not work every time but remember, progress not perfection, we’ll get there soon. And it begins, $1Million dollars I’m coming for you, you’re gonna be mine.

As usual you know what to do, smash the like button and follow this blog if you’re new. Cheerio!

Step-by-Step Guide to Millions – Day 13 – $0.76

The basics of starting and running an online business are starting to align in my head pretty quickly so far in this journey. I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that it’s going to take me 6 months and up to realize my first sale (not profit by the way). Now that is a bitter pill to swallow knowing very well that I set out to make money online in 8 months ($1,000,000 to be exact). I’ve learnt that in order to build a long term online business, I need a website, I need hosting and I need a domain name to start with. All of these cost money, money that I don’t actually have (so far I only have $0.76).

On top of that, you have to have the patience of creating valuable content for your website, creating social media content (YouTube videos, Facebook posts), optimize your website and content posts, build traffic, direct the traffic to your posts and content overtime, (which will help in building trust and credibility with your audience), build an email list and then (and only then) will you start finding appropriate products or services for your audience to promote and thereby make money. I don’t know about you but this sounds to me like a very tedious and time consuming task.

In my head, I was thinking I find a product then find a client and then make money, simple! But somehow the internet has become awfully complicated and it has never been harder to make money online than at a time like this. What I’m getting from my research is that there’s no way around this if I’m to create a long term sustainable online business. There is some pretty boring stuff to do in this process that could easily be outsourced if I had the money. But then again if I didn’t know how to do something, or at least the basics, how would I tell if the outcome of the outsourced task is the desired one?
